• Licensure and Accreditation of the BMS Degree Programs
  In the eloquent words of Dean Kremens...

  It is my privilege and great pleasure to inform all of you that today the DHE Board of Governors, made a final, very favorable and unconditional decision with regard to our application for simultaneous Licensure and Accreditation for BS in Biomolecular Sciences and MA in Biomolecular Sciences programs. The Board of Governors unanimously voted in favor of both BS in Biomolecular Sciences and MA in Biomolecular Sciences programs... Please join me in congratulating all our colleagues from the Biomolecular Sciences Department, who have been working very hard on this, and anxiously awaiting this moment.  I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Thomas King for his efforts in preparing a very good application documentation to the DHE. Now the BMS Department may focus on recruitment, but without a doubt, they will succeed with flying colors. Congratulations to all of you, and we all celebrate this success with the BMS Faculty.

• Two New BMS Courses
  At its December meeting, the CCSU Faculty Senate approved the addition of two new courses in our department. Questions about these new offerings should be directed to Cheryl Watson or Jim Mulrooney.
  • BMS 320: Histology. Prerequisites: BMS 201 or permission of department chair. A laboratory based course building on the concepts of protein and cell structure learned in BMS 201. Students will identify tissues and understand their special function and location in the body. Students will also learn techniques for tissue embedding, sectioning and staining. Two two-hour laboratories per week. Irregular. 2 credits.
  • BMS 414: Pharmacology, Physiology, and Drug Development. Prerequisites: (BMS 318 or BMS 319 or BMS 412 or BIO 318 or BIO 319 or BIO 412) and CHEM 122; or permission of department chair. Basic principles of pharmacology and the physiological mechanisms underlying drug action. Focus on the pharmacology of: the nervous and cardiovascular systems, chemical dependency and chemotherapy for cancer. Irregular. [c] 3 credits.

• We've Got a Home!
  The Department of Biomolecular Sciences now has an official department office, Copernicus Hall Rm 204. It's the old main office of the School of Technology (which has moved to NC 22407). The new Department phone number is 832-3560 and the fax number is 832-3562. Most exciting, though, is the arrival of our new Department Secretary, Maureen Renock. On behalf of the students and faculty in the Department, welcome aboard!

• MCAT Prep Course at CCSU
  Are you a sophomore or junior planning on entering medical school after graduation? This is your opportunity to take an MCAT preparation course here at CCSU. This course will let you take practice tests and measure your current level of preparation, and give you tools that will help improve your MCAT scores. This Spring 2005 non-credit course is CENC 450, MCAT Preparation (CRN 44954), TR 6-9 pm from Jan 20 through April 7. This course is not offered by a specific department, and so for registration purposes, it's listed alphabetically under the Subject "Non Credit". If you have any problems enrolling, or if you have any other questions, contact Dr. Cheryl Watson.

• Update for BMS Spring Course Offerings!!
  BMS 311, Cell Biology, has opened another lab section. Students can now enroll for the lecture MWF 10-10:50 with lab on Tuesday from 8-11 am. Ask Jim Mulrooney for further clarification.

• The last Friday of the Fall semester (Dec 3) will be a BMS Poster Party Smackdown! That afternoon, all of the BMS 201 students (at last count, there were about 357 of them!) will be presenting for everyone's viewing the results of their lab experiments. There will also be poster presentations by all the students doing independent projects in the BMS research labs. It'll be Poster Mania all afternoon! More details (like an official schedule) will appear here as they are finalized.

• There's been a slight change to the Friday seminar schedule. We're joining the Department of Biological Sciences at their seminar presented by Dr Kam Dahlquist of Vassar College. The seminar will be held in NC 231 (our normal seminar room), and there will be twice as much pizza as usual, so come hungry! Check the seminar schedule for more details.

• Yikes! The Fall semester has begun, and Copernicus is rocking! It's good to have you all back. Please be sure to attend the kickoff of the Friday seminar (and BMS 190 course) on Sept 3; the updated schedule is linked below. It will be a good chance to see familiar (and new) faces, find out about the new BMS department, and think about the research project you're going to work on this term. There will be food (pizza) and drink (soda).
