Report on Editorial Oversight                                                                   04.11.07

As the table below indicates, we found that CCSU editorial oversight is quite similar to that of our peer and sister institutions. All respect students’ freedom of speech and so do not, with one exception, engage in prior review of planned articles.  And all faculty and professional staff advisors conceive of their roles as just that—advisors, with only the power of persuasion.  The one area that CCSU does differ in is the use of workshops, which other institutions reportedly use somewhat more in educating students about a range of issues in their development as journalists.  Consonant with the president’s desire to ensure that the student newspaper functions as a “laboratory” of learning for students aspiring to journalism careers or those simply interested in becoming skilled student journalists, we would recommend that support/resources be allocated to provide students with greater opportunities to learn from professional workshops as well as from University-sponsored forums and related events.

Our subcommittee plans to continue our survey of peer institutions before developing its final recommendation.
