Social and Emotional Learning

Social and Emotional Learning is the process through which children and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to manage emotions, achieve goals, feel empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Recognized as a "university of compassion," CCSU has a long history of commitment to social justice and to excellence in the preparation of school and community-based professionals. In response to the growing violence in our society, the School of Education and Professional Studies has received broad support for its proposal to create the CCSU Center of Excellence for Social and Emotional Learning. Encouragement has sprung forth from many different quarters—from state legislators and leaders in education as well as from a number of families directly impacted by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The overarching goal of our Center is to provide education, training, and research support to CCSU students, educators, Connecticut citizens, and professional organizations to promote innovative approaches to enhancing and sustaining social and emotional learning (SEL) across the life span. Our key objectives are outlined below.

Objectives
  1. Establish a training program providing evidence-based professional development in SEL to professionals working with individuals across the lifespan. The development and dissemination of the SEL curriculum will be an initial focus of the Center and our training will include on-going technical assistance for school districts implementing SEL curriculum and measures of SEL competencies.

  2. Develop pedagogical approaches that infuse SEL into pre-service and graduate training for educators, educational leaders, counselors, and other school-based professionals.

  3. Establish SEL research hub focused on interdisciplinary and collaborative inquiry. This initiative will support research teams of CCSU faculty and undergraduate/graduate students as they investigate globally relevant best practices in SEL.

  4. Inform state and federal policy makers about the importance of fostering social and emotional learning in schools and across the lifespan to support positive outcomes for Connecticut’s children and other populations served.
