Technical Questions
  1. Can I connect to ResNet using my 56k modem?
No, ResNet is a direct, high speed internet connection that requires a 10/100Base-T Ethernet card. A modem is a dial-up connection that uses a phone line and therefore is not compatible with ResNet.

  2. What kind of Ethernet card do I need? What kind of cable?
Be sure it is a 10/100Base-T Network Interface Card (NIC) with an RJ-45 port. The cable that is used to connect to ResNet is a Category 5 cable, Cat-5 for short.

  3. What is PCMCIA?
PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) is an industry group organized in 1989 to promote standards for a credit card-size memory or I/O device that would fit into a personal computer, usually a notebook or laptop computer. They are small cards that slide into the side of your laptop. Most laptops utilize this technology for modems, Ethernet cards, etc.

Assorted Questions
  1. What type of content am I allowed to download?
Anything not prohibited by federal, state, or university laws.

  2. Can I download MP3s?
There is no official on-campus policy prohibiting you from downloading mp3s. However, if you violate any copyright laws then you are solely responsible. Peer-to-peer programs that allow downloading of mp3s are not allowed on our network and has extremely limited allocated bandwidth. Meaning that the network will not allow you to download mp3s at excessively high rates if at all. This policy was recently enforced due to the amount of bandwidth used up by these programs. When many residents download mp3s constantly it slows down the network and the entire campus internet connection suffers.

  3. Are file downloads on the internet limited as well?
No, anything you download from the internet will download at optimal speeds.

  4. Can I run my own server (web, ftp, etc.)?
Yes and No. Students are allowed to run their own servers but they are only localized to the intranet, not the internet. This means that the only way someone can view/access your server is if they are on campus. Also a student's server can not:
    • contain illegal information
    • cause stress on the network
    • serve any purposes that may be detrimental to the university.

  5. Can I run a game server?
Game servers are only allowed on our network. They are limited to the Intranet only. You are not allowed to have any off campus users joining your game and you are prohibited from joining off campus games.
