Programming Model: S.T.A.R.R.
The Department of Residence Life is committed to extending learning outside the classroom and educating the whole student. We have designed a programming model called S.T.A.R.R. that will develop and educate our students in this complex world. S.T.A.R.R. stands for Self, Teamwork, Action, Respect and Responsibility. At CCSU, we encourage our students to learn more about themselves and others by participating in our living and learning communities within our residence halls. There are 6 parts to Central's S.T.A.R.R. program. They are as follows:
Self: The self is the center of the star. Everything else is an extension of the self. In this area, students will learn a better sense of who they are with specific programming geared to social, personal development and health and well being. Some programming examples include exploring personal finance and enjoying movie nights.
Personal Safety: Students will be educated on how to cope with vulnerabilities they may allow themselves away from home. Dealing with the transition from the nest to being on one's own. Some program examples are Crime/Theft, Identity theft, Internet safety, self defense, fire prevention, Alcohol/drug awareness and prevention, sexual assault and sexual harassment.
Leadership: Students will have the opportunity to explore leadership opportunities within the residence halls, through a variety of clubs and organizations on campus. Students will gain a better understanding of themselves and how to benefit and lead others in daily interactions. Some programs may include hall leadership positions and lead roles within clubs and organizations
Professional Development: Students will acquire the skills they need to graduate and gain employment in their field of study. To assist our students with these skills, we want to give them the opportunity to craft and establish themselves in their profession. Some programming opportunities may include resume writing and job fairs.
Diversity: We give students the opportunity to discover and explore themselves while learning about other beliefs and cultures. Our world is filled with a diverse group of people who have different ideologies, thoughts, religions, sexual orientation and ethnicity. Some opportunities to discovering ones diversity may include meditation and reflection, Culture plunges and exploring differences and similarities.
Community/Campus service: Students will have the opportunity to give back to the Central campus as well as the city of New Britain through community service. They can reach out to the campus and assist in keeping it beautiful, safe, and clean for all students to enjoy. We encourage our students to also get involved in the New Britain community to ensure that our neighbors also have safe and clean environment to live in. Some programs may include a campus cleanup, reading in the magnet school or volunteering in a soup kitchen.
