Undergraduate:
The Department of Physical Education and Human
Performance offers
the following programs: Physical Education for teacher certification, a non-certifiable
option in Exercise Science/Health Promotion and a non-certifiable major in Athletic Training.
Physical Education for Teacher Certification, B.S.
Ed.
The Physical Education teacher preparation program prepares future
teachers for public and private schools in the State of Connecticut.
Those students who successfully complete the program are eligible for
certification in nursery/kindergarten – grade 12 Physical Education.
Exercise Science and Health Promotion:
The Exercise Science and Health Promotion program is a non-teacher
certifiable program, which prepares students for employment in
fitness/wellness centers at worksite (business and industry) medical
(hospitals, clinics and HMOs) and strength and conditioning settings. Students
are given the necessary cognitive and practical experiences for certification by
the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and National Strength and
Conditioning Association (NSCA). Students
are responsible for assessing, interpreting, prescribing and designing health
and physical activity programs.
Athletic Training:
The Athletic Training program is a non-teacher certifiable program,
which prepares students for employment as athletic trainers in sports medicine
clinics, schools and colleges, and professional sports.
Students are given the necessary cognitive and practical experiences for
certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), Board of
Certification.

Cross-Endorsement programs
for certified teachers:
A cross-endorsement may be obtained by anyone who has an existing teaching
certification in any area.
The state regulations are that the candidate take coursework in the
area in which he/she seeks the endorsement.
Cross-Endorsement programs for certified teachers:
The ultimate decision as to which courses are applicable to the Cross Endorsement in
Health Education rests with the State Certification Bureau.
