Connecticut Collegiate Awareness and Preparation Program (ConnCAP)

"Preparing Today’s Scholars and Tomorrows Leaders!"

What is ConnCAP?

Established in 1987 under the Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education, the Collegiate Awareness and Preparation Program (ConnCAP) was designed to increase the number of graduating high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds and prepare them with the necessary skills and motivation for success in college.

Now, in its second decade, Central Connecticut State University’s ConnCAP program is one of the oldest and largest in the state. The program serves 120 students in grades 7 – 12, annually. Over 400 students have participated in CCSU’s ConnCAP program, which has an average program retention rate of 84% and a college-going rate well above the national average.

What services are provided to ConnCAP participants?

A challenging six-week summer academic instruction held on CCSU’s campus

     9th grade “Study Skills” course

     Academic advising and enrichment

     Career development

College admission information and campus visits

Assist with the college and scholarship applications, and financial aid forms

     Financial aid advising

     SAT preparation and fee waivers

     Tutoring

     Computer technology training

     Cultural and educational enrichment activities

     College tracking and follow-up

ConnCAP personnel work with a network of invested partners – parents, teachers, school counselors, community service personnel, and CCSU employees - to ensure every student is successful.

How are ConnCAP Students Selected?

Interested students are required to complete an application, and provide three letters of reference, test scores and transcripts, a personal essay, and financial documentation.

Student selection is dependant on many factors, including but not limited to a student’s written application, parental involvement, letters of recommendation, a personal interview, academic records, potential, and motivation to succeed.

Under-represented youth from modest family incomes, in which neither parent has earned a four-year college degree, are strongly encouraged to apply.
