CCSU Alumni E-News, January 2011

The CCSU Alumni ENews is designed to keep alumni and friends up-to-date with news from the University, including important announcements, student and alumni achievements, athletic news and upcoming events.

Carnegie Foundation Recognizes CCSU's Commitment to Community Engagement

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching selected CCSU as a Community Engagement Institution. CCSU was cited for “excellent alignment among mission, culture, leadership, resources, and practices that support dynamic and noteworthy community engagement.” Central joined 115 other U.S. colleges and universities in the new classification, which the Carnegie Foundation announced on Wednesday, January 5. More information here.

New Program to Help More CT Students Achieve College Education

Central's historic commitment to providing access to a college education for a broad range of students is taking on a new shape. The University is participating in the new "Access 2 Success" program, aimed at increasing the proportion of low income and minority students who enroll in and graduate from college.

While directed primarily at those populations, the program will benefit all students through new policies to keep students on track to graduate, by increasing support services to students, such as advising, tutoring, and mentoring, and by finding the resources to ensure that students with financial need can afford to attend college. More information here.

Blue Devil Basketball Teams Begin Seasons Strong

CCSU's men’s and women’s basketball teams are off to fantastic starts to the 2010-11 seasons. As of Jan. 7, neither team has lost a home game this season. They represent the only university in the Northeast Conference which has both teams unbeaten at home this season. The men are 6-0 at home and have won five straight games, giving them a 9-5 overall record. The women’s team is 7-5 overall and 3-0 at home. Both teams will host Long Island on Sat., Jan. 8, beginning with the women’s game at 1 p.m.

Upcoming Alumni Events

The University is hosting several alumni events in January & February, including 3 in Florida. That's not very fair to those of us stuck in Connecticut, but, then again, it will be easier for us to catch several terrific Blue Devil basketball events, right here in New Britain. To learn more and to register for the events, please click here.

CCSU & Connecticut Commemorate 150th Anniversary of Civil War

The University will be home to the Connecticut Civil War Commemoration, a series of events marking the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. More than 70 state and local organizations are collaborating to develop programming and events commemorating Connecticut’s part in the Great Rebellion. From re-enactments and cannon firings to thought-provoking speeches and conferences, the April 12-17 events will thrill, entertain, and inform. More information here.
