Alfred A. Gates is the ET Manufacturing Program Coordinator within the School of Engineering and Technology and point of contact for the Automation Laboratory at Central Connecticut State University. He is also the principal investigator of the development of a BSET Composite and Polymer Materials Program at CCSU.

Industrial Experience:

Alfred A. Gates has experience working as a manufacturing engineer while working for Rochester Products Division of General Motors. His responsibilities included product evaluation for assembly, single robot assembly cell design and evaluation of automated assembly equipment. Dr. Gates worked at General Dynamics Electric Boat as a mechanical engineer responsible for the design and analysis of the main steam piping system for the SSN21 fast attack submarine. He performed pipe stress analysis, fatigue, thermal stress analysis, shock and vibration using the finite element method. Dr. Gates also worked as a mechanical engineer (Research and Development) for the Naval Under Sea Warfare Center. He was responsible for the development of a finite element-based automatic shape optimization program for three dimensional shell structures. The program was used to optimize weight critical structures on submarines and ships. In addition Dr. Gates was responsible for analyzing structures using a variety of composite materials to minimize weight and cost.

 

Research Interests:

Robotics, assembly cell design, multi-task end-effector design, finite-element based shape optimization techniques. Dr. Gates has published over 20 technical papers.
