O'Neill Public Service Scholarship for students enrolled in CCSU's Equal Opportunity Program (EOP)
EOP tour and attendance at a forum at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston, Mass.
To honor the legacy of the late Governor William A. O’Neill, a Public Service Scholarship was established in 2009. A portion of the earnings from the Endowed Chair will be used to support scholarships for undergraduate students who are pursuing a degree program leading to a career in public service (e. g., government, education, not-for-profit, etc.).
The scholarships are specifically intended to support students in CCSU's Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) who seek to follow the dedicated example set by Governor O’Neill during his long career of public service.
At the EOP awards banquet held on August 6, 2009, Mrs. Nikki O’Neill presented each of three incoming EOP students a scholarship in the amount of $2000 for the 2009-10 academic year, intended to follow them through three additional years at CCSU. It is anticipated that two new students will be added yearly. These first recipients were: Mr. Franklin Rutledge (Bristol); Ms. Genesis Ladinez (Norwalk); and Mr. Jose Cadiz (Hartford).
The O’Neill Chair has cultivated a special relationship with EOP and its students, having served as a link to the resources of the JFK Presidential Library in Boston through Executive Director Steven Kliger’s continuing position at the Library, and by having collaborated in securing speakers to address public service and public policy issues for EOP students.
