CONGRATULATIONS! to our 2008 CCSU MIS Team
CCSU students Brian Lang, Jamie Doiron, Bill Keene, and Cory Gill took third prize in a national IT case competition sponsored by Travelers on November 21, 2008. All four students are Management Information Systems (MIS) majors in the School of Business.

“Competition was keen, so we are proud of our team’s performance,” reports Dr. Marianne D’Onofrio, professor and chair of MIS at CCSU.

This year’s competition centered on the role of information technology (IT) professionals in a hypothetical company, called “X6,”which was described as “the #1 writer of specialized insurance products.” The case outlined the current state of X6 and posed questions on how market trends would affect the future of the company.

“The students assumed the role of IT strategy consultants and presented three IT solutions for the CEO to consider in facilitating X6’s continued growth trend,” explains Dr. Olga Petkova, professor of MIS and faculty sponsor for the CCSU team. “The final presentation for the competition was held at Travelers, where the CCSU team competed with the University of Connecticut (who won first prize), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (second), Syracuse University, and the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire. The CCSU team’s third prize award was accompanied by a $250 check for the team members.”
The Travelers IT case competition is designed to give students an opportunity to use their research skills to tackle real-world IT questions and to present to and network with representatives from Travelers. Travelers is a leading provider of property casualty insurance for auto, home, and business. Serving customers globally, it is a Fortune 100 company with 2007 revenues of approximately $26 billion. This is the fourth year Travelers has sponsored the IT case competition.
