Université de Caen

Program Overview

With a rich history dating back through five centuries, the University of Caen, is home  to a large student population at its three campuses in Caen and satellite sites throughout the region.  Caen is the capitol of Lower Normandy, France, and was founded in the 11th Century by William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England.  Impressive sites from its medieval past, including the remnants of William the Conqueror’s castle, two 11th Century churches, blend with modern reconstruction completed after the devastation of World War II.  Today, Caen enjoys a rich cultural life as an administrative and academic center, and is within a 2-hour train ride from Paris.  The University's Center for Foreign Students, Centre d'Ensiegnement Universitaire International pour Etrangers, (CEUIE) provides specialized French language courses for students at all levels.

Academic Subjects

Students take 20 hours/week of French language and culture as determined by a placement test taken upon arrival in Caen.  Levels range from the elementary to intermediate and advanced levels.  Students with a high level of French fluency are also able to participate in regular courses at the University of Caen, in Economics, Business, or Literature as part of the language program.  See the International Education Coordinator for specific course details and availability.

Academic Calendar

Full Academic Year: mid-October to late May

Fall Semester: early October to mid-December

Spring Semester: early February to late May

Housing

Students have several housing options from which to choose while living in Caen. The University of Caen is able to arrange a variety of off-campus options prior to your arrival in France, including rooms in local homes with and without partial and full-board.  A limited number of dormitory rooms are available at the University of Caen for those students studying at the CEUIE language program.  Residence halls are co-ed, including bathroom facilities.  The CEUIE staff in France selects the students for the dormitory spaces; therefore, campus housing cannot be guaranteed by CCSU.  Cafeteria facilities are available at the various campuses on a pay-as-you go basis for all students.

Program Costs

Tuition and fees are payable to the University of Caen.  Due to the range of housing options, we encourage students to budget their accommodation and board costs abroad as they would if living on the CCSU campus.  Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to Caen.
