Forefront is the anti-spam solution, powered by Microsoft, that is replacing our current solution, SonicWall.  Forefront will help to protect our inbound and outbound e-mail from spam, viruses, phishing scams, and e-mail policy violations. Some benefits of Forefront include:

  • Better protection against spam - Forefront is powered by multiple spam filtering engines and a team of anti-spam experts.
  • Increased retention time - you will now have 15 days to review any messages marked as spam, as opposed to the 7 days you had with SonicWall.

How will I receive spam quarantine notifications?

Every 3 days, you will receive an e-mail notification from "quarantine@messaging.microsoft.com" that details the messages that were sent to you and marked as spam. If you would like to check your spam messages more frequently, you may log in to your Forefront quarantine mailbox account at any time by going to https://quarantine.messaging.microsoft.com. Your Forefront username is your CCSU e-mail address.

The first time you access your Forefront quarantine mailbox account, you will need to set a password by clicking on the Need your password? link. Enter your CCSU e-mail address and click on Send. An e-mail will be sent to you containing a link to set or reset your password.

Can I change the notification interval of when I receive reports from Forefront?
No, you cannot change the notification interval. All users will receive a notification every 3 days. If you do not want to receive a notification, you may log in to your Forefront quarantine mailbox account at https://quarantine.messaging.microsoft.com to turn off the notification. Your Forefront username is your CCSU e-mail address.

How do I manage spam messages with FOSE?

You can manage spam messages using the the spam quarantine notification you receive via e-mail or by logging in to your Forefront quarantine mailbox account:

If a message has been incorrectly identified as spam, click on the Not Junk link to move it to your Outlook Inbox. This also submits a copy to the Forefront Spam Team for analyis.

If you would like to read a message before determining if it was incorrectly identified as spam, click on the Move to Inbox link or click on the Subject of the message (if you are not logged in to the Forefront quarantine mailbox account, you will be prompted to log in). If you determine that the message was incorrectly identified as spam, click on the Not Junk link. If the message is spam, you do not need to do anything as it will be automatically deleted after 15 days.

For some messages, the Not Junk link is unavailable. This is because the message contains attributes that are blocked by CCSU policies, such as java script, vb script, or no SPF (Sender Policy Framework) record.

The Forefront quarantine mailbox account password does not synchronize with my BlueNet account password. How do I reset my password?

To reset your Forefront quarantine mailbox account password, access the log in page at https://quarantine.messaging.microsoft.com and click on the Change password link. Your Forefront username is your CCSU e-mail address.

If I specify something as "Not Junk" will it come directly to my Inbox in the future?

When you use the Not Junk link, the message will be delivered to your Inbox and a copy will be submitted to the Forefront Spam Team for analysis. Forefront will make the determination to allow or not allow the mail through in the future. You may need to mark messages from particular senders more than once in order for Forefront to learn that the sender is not sending spam.

Outlook users may download and install the Junk E-mail Reporting Tool for Outlook. This tool will add a button to the toolbar in Outlook that will directly report junk e-mail to Microsoft and its affiliates for analysis to help them improve the effectiveness of their junk e-mail filtering technologies.

You may also forward a copy of the spam message to  junkmailsubmission@ccsu.edu. In order for Forefront to properly record it as spam, you will need to include the "Internet Header" information with your forwarded message:

Outlook 2007:

  1. Open the spam message.
  2. From the Message tab, in the Options group, click on the Dialog Box Launcher button (the small square next to the word Options).
  3. Select all the text in the Internet Headers box, then press Ctrl+C to copy the text into your clipboard. Close the Message Options window.
  4. From the spam message, click on the Forward button.
  5. Press Ctrl+V to paste the header text into the top of the message. Leave a blank line between the headers and the message body.
  6. Address the message to junkmailsubmission@ccsu.edu and click on the Send button, then delete the message from your Inbox.

  8. Enter the address: junkmailsubmission@mail.ccsu.edu in the "To:" field of your new message.
