IT Self-Help: Maintenance Tips for Macs (Apple Macintosh Computers)

Resetting the Parameter RAM (PRAM):

  1. Restart your Mac computer.

  2. When the screen turns black, press and hold the OptionAppleP, and R keys until you hear the computer startup jingle 4 times, and then release the keys. The computer will reset all of the system parameter RAM to default.

This procedure helps lessen the frequency of system crashes, and cycles out useless data in the RAM which would otherwise result in less memory available to run applications.
