IT Self-Help: Defragmenting your Computer Hard Drive

As you use your computer, files on the hard drive fragment causing the system to lose efficiency. Disk Defragmenter is a utility that reassembles your files, thereby decreasing loading times, and improves hard drive efficiency,thereby restoring system performance.

Before beginning the defragmentation process, be sure you are not running any other programs, as they will not only slow down the process, but can also hinder the defragmentation procedure.

Disk Defragmenter is installed on all Windows 2000/XP computer by default. To access it please follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Start button

  2. Click on All Programs

  3. Select Accessories

  4. Select System Tools

  5. Select Disk Defragmenter

  6. Once Disk Defragmenter is open, select the drive you want to be defragmented, then click Defrag at the bottom.

If at this point you are informed there is no defragmenting utility available, and you are using a CCSU computer, please call the IT Help Desk at 21720, and they will arrange to have it installed for you.

You can also click on Analyze to discover if the drive needs defragmenting. After a minute or two the utility will make a recommendation to defragment or not. To begin defragmenting a drive double-click its Defragment icon.

The Disk Defragmenter will automatically defragment the hard drive and continue the process even if the station is locked or the screen saver is running. Once defragmentation is complete, you can exit the program by left-clicking the File menu located in the upper left corner of the window, left-clicking Exit, and you are done!

  • To defragment a computer's hard drive you must be an "Administrator" on that machine.
  • Disk Defragmenter is for Windows 2000, XP and Vista only.
