Message from the Dean

As Dean of the School of Education and Professional Studies (SEPS), it is a pleasure, and my privilege, to welcome you to the SEPS website at Central Connecticut State University. As you explore these pages, you will find out why I am so honored to be Dean! We have an outstanding faculty that includes many nationally recognized experts and scholars. And whether you are interested in a career in education, health care, fitness, or social services, we offer excellent programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I encourage you to consider the wide range of programs offered by our eight departments, all dedicated to the “helping professions.”

As Connecticut’s first teacher-training institution, SEPS continues a long tradition of excellence, dating back to 1849. We take great pride in knowing that our teacher education and educational leadership programs are founded on a rich history, with over 150 years of exemplary service to the public school systems and children of Connecticut. In fact, MastersDegreeOnline.org has cited our Special Education program as one of the “best programs in the nation.” And recent graduates of our teacher preparation and leadership programs have gone on to earn numerous prestigious professional honors, such as the Milken Educator Award (the “Oscars of Teaching”) and the MetLife/National Association of Secondary School Principals award, among others.

Programs offered within the School of Education and Professional Studies are committed to enacting CCSU’s overarching Elements of Distinctiveness. Examples from across SEPS include:

International Education. Aside from study abroad opportunities, we have long-standing partnerships with Sam Sharpe Teacher’s College and Mico University College located in the country of Jamaica, that involve our Reading and Language Arts Department, Nursing Department and Department of Educational Leadership.

Community Engagement. Students from all of SEPS programs engage in field experiences at the James H. Naylor/CCSU Leadership Academy in Hartford, Connecticut, learning how societal needs can be addressed collaboratively and from multiple perspectives, e.g., from the viewpoint of the teacher, the social worker and the nurse. Additionally, we offer the only graduate program in the country that prepares marriage and family therapists to serve as certified School Marriage and Family Therapists.

Workforce and State Economic Development. Programs offered through SEPS, simply stated, prepare professionals for service in our communities. Whether they be exercise and fitness professionals promoting a healthy lifestyle or our doctorally-prepared school leaders, shaping the future of public education…upon graduation all SEPS students make meaningful and lasting contributions to Connecticut’s workforce and economy.

Interdisciplinary Studies and Cross Curricular Initiatives. When faculty from different disciplines work together, exciting programs can emerge. One such initiative is the Central Connecticut Writing Project. Every summer, the Department of Reading and Language Arts partners with the English Department to offer this innovative program to Connecticut’s public school teachers. As part of the National Writing Project (NWP), this federally-funded model for professional development develops teachers both as writers and as writing teachers.

As you can tell, there are many exciting things taking place within SEPS. Please feel free to contact me, Associate Dean Elaine Wilson, Assistant Dean Anne Pautz, or any of our departments if you require information beyond what is provided in these pages. On behalf of the faculty, administration and staff, we invite you to join us at the School of Education and Professional Studies at Central Connecticut State University. Start with a dream. Finish ready to begin or expand upon a rewarding career in education or human services.
