This non-credit enrichment program will take you to the East of Spain where you will have the opportunity to learn about the culture and enjoy the food of two fascinating regions: Cataluña and Valencia. You will be accompanied Dr. Palamo Lapuerta a CCSU professor of Spanish, who is a native and expert in the area, and by Dr. Pam Perry, founder of University Singers, who will direct a select group of CCSU alumni to provide brief musical performances relevant to the places visited.
The program begins in Barcelona where you will spend two days visiting the old city, the harbor area and some of the building representative of the Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi. You will also visit the market of the Boquería, a temple of Spanish gastronomy, and you be introduced to tapas and regional specialties. You will also participate in a cooking class and wine tasting.
From Barcelona a day excursion is planned to Figueras, hometown of painter Salvaor Dali, to visit his museum and to the medieval city of Girona, where the participants will visit the Jewish quarters and will taste the specialties of the Ampurdan region, known for its variety of cheeses and charcuteries, among other delicious dishes.
From Barcelona we will take you on a fascinating trip through the Maestrazgo region, which is a mountainous rural area, off the beaten track, but full of castles and other historical sites such as walled cities of Morella and Ares del Maestre. The night will be spent in the village of Cantavieja, where the participants will be able to enjoy a very special meal.
You will appreciate a dramatic landscape of olive and almond trees on the descent toward the coastal city of Valencia where you will spend two nights. Valencia is a vibrant and welcoming place. You will visit the city of the Arts and Sciences, which was built by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, and you will enjoy the old market, the narrow streets of the old city, the beaches and the paella, which is the local specialty and nothing similar to what you think the dish is all about!
The sight of the Mediterranean Sea and orange orchards will accompany you during the trip from Valencia to Barcelona, where you will spend an afternoon of free strolling shopping.
