Chinese New Years Gala, Saturday January 26th

The Chinese Culture Center (CCC), the Confucius Institute and East Asian Center at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) are proud to present the Chinese New Year Gala on Saturday, January 26th in Welte Hall at CCSU.

 The New Year Gala Show will begin with an official welcome by CCSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Carl Lovitt followed by an address and award ceremony by Chinese Culture Center President Ashley Yen as well as keynote speaker and international forensics expert, Dr. Henry Lee.

Dr. Lee has been a prominent player in many of the most challenging cases of the last fifty years. Dr. Lee has worked with law enforcement agencies form 46 countries in helping to solve more than 8000 cases. He is currently the Director of Forensic Research and Training Center and a Distinguished Professor in Forensic Science of University of New Haven.

He was the Chief Emeritus for Connecticut State Police during 2000 to 2010 and has worked on famous cases such as the O. J. Simpson, Jason Williams, Peterson, and Kennedy Smith trials, as well as assisted local and state police in their investigations of other famous crimes, such as the murder of Jon Benet Ramsey in Boulder, Colorado, the 1993 suicide of White House Counsel Vincent Foster, the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart, the death of Sandra Levy, and the reinvestigation of the Kennedy assassination.


The colorful show will feature performances in a variety of genres, including acrobatics, magic, martial arts, song and dance, skits, instrument ensemble, and comic improvisation. In addition to the great performances, the CCC will distribute HONG BAO (a red envelope with money) to children in attendance; one of the most popular features of the Chinese New Year, a symbolic gesture done to celebrate life, happiness, and good luck. 

Among the performing groups will be famous Acrobat master Xiaodi Yang, world gold medal award winner Magician Suxiong Wu, and well-known Soprano Xufeng Liu, all of whom hail from New York City.

Performers include students from dance classes, choir class, instrument class, and Kung Fu classes of Connecticut Chinese Language Academy (CCLA) of CCC and Theatre Department of CCSU in New Britain; Other performers will include Ju Long Wu Shu of South Windsor; Malee’s School of Tai Chi & Kung Fu from Manchester; East Culture Arts of West Hartford; Asian Performing Arts of South Windsor; Kang Hua Singers of Greater Hartford & Hartford Chorale of Hartford; Xi Wang dance school of Cheshire; Simsbury High School of Simsbury; and Hartford Chinese Dance Troupe of West Hartford, CT.
