NAACP branch holds awards gala in New Haven with civil rights activist Julian Bond as speaker

The night’s theme was “Affirming America’s promise: Equality through education.” In keeping with this, four seniors from New Haven public schools received scholarships: Amber Cross of Wilbur Cross High School, who is president of the Greater New Haven NAACP Youth Council; Tiffany Goodridge, also of Wilbur Cross; Ashford Okang of New Haven Academy High School; and Whitney White of Hill Regional Career High School.

In addition, five Freedom Fund Awards were given. The lifetime achievement award went to William R. Dyson, who served in the state House of Representatives for 32 years and worked in the New Haven public schools for 36 years.
