College and Career Compentency Course

COURSE OVERVIEW     

  • The College and Career Competencies Class is a course designed to introduce students to recognize career competencies as developed by CCSU’s TRiO Educational Talent Search (ETS) Program.
  • The course will present these competencies in modules consisting of classroom presentations, student conversations, guest speakers and visits to local businesses.
  • Currently enrolled high school students will be eligible to complete each module independently and receive credit toward graduation requirements upon successful completion of each competency.
  • High School students are eligible to receive 0.5 credits upon successfully completing 60 class hours.  
  • Adult Credit Diploma students are eligible to receive 0.5 credits upon successfully completing 30 class hours.

TRiO College and Career Competencies

Personal Qualities

Has a can-do attitude and is a self-starter; habitually arrives on time, doesn’t leave early, has adaptability, ability to control emotions, flexibility; demonstrates dependability, self-management. Dresses appropriately and displays honesty and integrity. 

College Research

Students will identify their personal characteristics, learning styles, decision-making styles, career goals, and new ways to access college programs through research to maximize their college readiness.

College Survival

Focus on the development of time management, learning strategies, study skills techniques, and communication skills that enable students to become responsible and enthusiastic participants in their own academic career.

Job Seeking

Resume, cover letter, references, evidence of job searches, “dress for success” interview; completed job application, interviewing, networking, education attainment, and work-based experiences.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

Capable of teamwork, works without supervision, works with diverse backgrounds, maintains productive group relationships, cooperates, and accepts supervision.

Computer Literacy

Capable of keyboarding, general data entry, ability to navigate in Windows environment, understand and use computer terminology, able to use Internet, e-mail, access web resources. 

Customer Service

Able to provide accurate and timely information, deliver services, deal with difficult customers, work in a team environment, help solve problems, engage customers, and make eye contact. 

Financial Literacy

Having the knowledge, skills and confidence to make responsible financial decisions. 

Basic Skills 1: Mathematic Skills

Can perform basic math functions, interpret and solve algebraic equations, calculate, create and use tables and graphs, integrate information from multiple texts, charts, graphs, and use seven functions of math. 

Basic Skills 2:   Reading Skills

Can comprehend, explain and analyze information from various sources, can use context cues and higher order processes to interpret meaning of written texts. 

Problem Solving and Decision-Making

Ability to read and follow multi-step directions, reason and think creatively, make appropriate decisions, identify and solve problems, interpret information, ask questions, use problem solving strategies.
