Introduction to Public Speaking

Course Description:
Public speaking is the second greatest fear in life, the first being death.  In the course of a working career, it is not unusual for an employee to be asked to make a presentation.  Without prior experience, public speaking tasks can generate significant nervousness and stress, not only causing unnecessary suffering to the speaker, but also to the audience and sponsor.  Poor presentations damage the credibility of both the presenter and the organization.  In this course, students will realize 2 specific benefits, knowledge and skill.   First, students will be introduced to some basic concepts that are used by public speakers to improve their presentations.  Second and more important, students will practice a few speaking skills and will be given an opportunity to increase their presentation abilities.  All criticisms and suggestions will be made in a positive, supportive and respectful manner.

Note – Like many skills in life, you can read all about developing a skill, but only through practice can you improve.  The most effective development comes when you have an opportunity to practice in front of someone who can provide you with critical and instantaneous feedback.  To understand public speaking, you must practice. In this class we learn by doing.
