Course Description:
This workshop will provide a conceptual framework for understanding motivational and self-determination factors in human fulfillment and growth across a multicultural spectrum. Workshop will also provide practical strategies and programs to apply this knowledge in enhancing academic and athletic achievement at individual and team levels while promoting holistic growth for all athletic team members.

Instructor Vernon Percy, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in the Counseling and Marriage & Family Therapy Department at Central Connecticut State University. Vernon earned his M.Ed. in Counseling and Psychological Services with a specialization in Athletic Counseling from Springfield College and a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education.  His dissertation focused on the phenomenological lived experiences of African American student-athletes in Division I revenue-producing sports.  Over the past 15 years he has served in various sport related roles including as a counselor with the University of Connecticut's football program, NFL's Play It Smart initiative, and as Director of an afterschool sport-based boy's program for UCONN's Husky Sport Partnership.  Vernon's research interests include racial and athletic identity development in sport, multicultural counseling, and sport based community programming.
