IT Weekly Announcement - March 6, 2014
Current & Scheduled Outages/System Updates
Network Maintenance in Copernicus– Sunday March 16
Due to hardware upgrades, there will be no network activity in offices between 8:00 A.M. and 12:00 P.M. and intermittent network outages in Copernicus between 12:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. It may be necessary to reboot or restart your computer or network printer after the update is performed.
Sunday Maintenance – Reminder
Every Sunday, between 12:00am – 12:00pm, all systems will be intermittently unavailable while important maintenance and updates are performed.
Weekly Maintenance – Reminder
Please log off your computer when leaving for the day every Thursday, but do not power it off. This will allow updates to be sent down to your computer on Friday after 12:00am. If you turn your computer off and leave it off over night on Thursday, shortly after turning it back on, your computer will restart in order to install and apply any updates. If you leave your computer logged in Thursday night into Friday, you may lose any unsaved data you were working on when the computer restarts.
New Mobile Device Security Policy
We are implementing a new mobile security policy for mobile devices you use to connect to your CCSU employee email account. This policy applies to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It requires you to have a screen lock PIN set on your mobile device in order to access your CCSU employee email. Once this policy is applied, there are two added security features: the device will be reset to factory defaults after 10 invalid PIN attempts and the device will have the ability to be remotely reset to factory defaults if it is lost or stolen. On April 6th, this policy will be enforced through settings on our CCSU email server. If you do not have a PIN set on your device by April 6th, you will lose CCSU email connectivity on your device until you set a PIN. We highly recommend setting a screen lock PIN on your mobile before April 6th. Please note, the date has been changed from March 6th to April 6th.
Important Information for Laptop Users
Please connect your laptop to the CCSU wired network at least once a month to receive important security updates. To ensure the updates are applied, it is best to plug the laptop into a power source and leave it powered on overnight while connected to the network.
Software Installation Assistance
The removal of administrative rights on computers has significantly reduced virus threats on campus. Should you need to install software, the Help Desk is just a phone call away. Please call (860)832-1720 Monday through Thursday from 8:00am to 8:00pm and Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm.
Green Printer Initiative
Do you have an OLD printer that isn’t doing too well and want a free upgrade? We have a limited number of duplex printers to help departments save on paper and reduce energy consumption. If you are interested in being considered for this program, please contact the IT Help Desk. Please be sure to provide the model number of your printer and state asset tag. These duplex printers are only for networked printing (which requires an available data drop), with a minimum of 4 people sharing the printer.
