NEW STUDENT ADVISING

 First-year Students

Students in the School of Education and Professional Studies (SEPS) have multiple advisors. After the initial advising and course registration that takes place during the summer academic advising program, students are assigned to an advisor in the Center for Advising and Career Exploration (CACE). Your CACE advisor will help you with your adjustment to college, guide you in career exploration of the teaching profession, and help you develop an academic plan. Your CACE advisor will help you choose classes for your second semester at CCSU. Once your CACE advisor determines that you are successfully on your way towards admission to the Professional Program for Teacher Certification, you will be assigned a faculty advisor in your subject major department. Some advisors contact their advisees; however, most students need to contact the department to find out the name of their advisor along with the advisor’s office hours, and then make an appointment to see their advisor. Continuing students register for upcoming semesters using the University’s Central Pipeline system. During advising sessions, students obtain a PIN number from their advisor, which allows them access to the Central Pipeline system.

Transfer Students

Newly admitted transfer students majoring in a School of Education and Professional Studies (SEPS) program are advised in the SEPS Advising Center in Barnard Hall. We highly encourage new students to make an appointment ASAP after acceptance to the University. The earlier you are advised, the earlier you can register for courses. Students who delay often have difficulty registering for required courses. Advising for Fall admission generally begins in early April. Advising for Spring admission generally begins in October.

Education Majors: All students interested in any education program are advised during a Transfer Advising Seminar, generally held on Fridays throughout the year.  These seminars are held in Barnard Hall and attended by six to eight students. During these group sessions, students learn about university requirements, policies and procedures, their subject matter majors, and requirements for entering the Professional Program for Teacher Certification. During the seminar, students will be individually advised for course selection and receive all the necessary materials to register themselves on-line including their alternate PIN number. Athletic Training Majors and Exercise Science and Health Promotion Majors should call 860-832-2112 for an individual appointment. Sometimes students may also need to meet with an advisor in the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance following this initial meeting.

Pre-Nursing Majors (not RN-BSN majors) are advised in small group sessions during April and May for CCSU Fall semester admission. During these group sessions, students learn about university requirements, policies and procedures, the Nursing major, and requirements for being accepted to the Nursing Program. During the session students will be individually advised for course selection and receive all the necessary materials to register themselves on-line including their alternate PIN number. Students should call 860-832-2112 to sign up for an advising session.

Pre-Social Work Majors are advised in small group sessions throughout the year. During these group sessions, students learn about university requirements, policies and procedures, the Social Work program, and requirements for being accepted to the Social Work program. During the session students will be individually advised for course selection and receive all the necessary materials to register themselves on-line including their alternate PIN number. Students should call 860-832-2370 to sign up for an advising session. Click here for Advising Dates.
