Catherine J. Fellows
Dance Program Director and Professor
Catherine J. Fellows is a Full Professor and Director of the Dance program at Central Connecticut State University where she has been a faculty member since 1976. During her tenure, Fellows has pioneered, designed and implemented the dance major and minor in the Department of Theatre and the Dance Cross Endorsement in the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance.
Her experience and expertise in teaching, performing, and choreography have led to many successful residencies, performances and presentations at colleges and universities, public and private schools, conferences and conventions. She has toured internationally performing, guest teaching and presenting Dance Education workshops in England, Italy, and Hungary and is well recognized for her community engagement events throughout New England.
She established the CCSU Artist in Residence program bringing to the area world renowned companies and international acclaimed choreographers and dance companies; Merce Cunningham, Jennifer Muller/The Works, The Martha Graham Dance Ensemble, Paul Taylor: Taylor 2, and Hubbard Street to name a few. As a choreographer, Fellows has created over one hundred works including her renowned full length modern ballets: Barefoot, Fullswing and Come Together and annually directs mainstage dance concerts open to the general public. As a performing artist, she was recently seen in Gratitude, Migrant Mother, and 129 and Beyond. Fellows is a veteran company member of the Albano Ballet for over thirty years and has performed with Frances Alenikoff, Viola Farber, and members of the Twyla Tharp Co. She actively works on the national, regional, and state level promoting dance in education. She has served several times on CTAHPERD’s executive board as Dance VP. Awards include: CTAHPERD’s Professional Honor Award, 2011; The CT Dance Alliance Distinguished Achievement Award, 2009; CTAHPERD’s Professional Merit Award, 2001; AAHPERD Merit Award in Dance, 1989. Incidentally, she was responsible for putting the “D” in CTAHPERD in 1978. Her memberships with professional organizations are numerous, to include, The American Association of Health, PE, Recreation and Dance, National Dance Association, National Dance Education Organization, and the Connecticut Dance Alliance.
She is happy to say that under her guidance, CCSU is host to the CT Dance Teacher Certification Program. She is very proud of her Central student’s successes; many are placed as dance educators in public and private schools. Professor Fellows is very passionate about her work in Dance Education and is determined to see that all children have the opportunity to be educated through Dance by making sure that Connecticut public schools employ certified dance teachers.
