GIS Certificate Course 1: Basic Principles of GIS
Course Description:
This first of 4 courses will introduce students to the fundamental concepts of GIS, including spatial thinking, geographic data, basic cartography, GIS components, and GIS general practices. It will define what GIS is, why it is important, and provide the background to the software, hardware, data, and methodologies of the science. The lab portion of the course will emphasize practical hands-on applications of principles discussed in lectures.

Instructor Thad Dymkowski is a double alumnus of CCSU with GISP certification. His 10-plus years of GIS experience are spread between public and private sectors, as well as academia. He has presented at several regional conferences on GIS applications and coordinates the annual State GIS Day event for the Connecticut GIS Council. He is an active member of the Connecticut GIS community and participates regularly in the GIS User to User Network.
