Note from Athletic Director Paul Schlickmann
The Department of Athletics is embarking on a Strategic Plan that will chart the course for Blue Devil Athletics for the next five years and beyond. The purpose is to develop a comprehensive plan which outlines our vision, priorities, goals, and strategies for success. A critical component of this plan, A Commitment to Excellence, will be an aggressive fundraising initiative that will be an integral part of the University Campaign for CCSUCCESS. The mission of the Intercollegiate Athletics Program is inextricably linked to the mission of the University. Therefore, as Central Connecticut State University aspires to become the finest public, comprehensive university in the Northeast and a leader among its peer institutions in the nation, the Intercollegiate Athletics Program aspires to be the premier athletics program in the Northeast Conference, and among comparable Division I institutions in our region and beyond.
Since joining the Northeast Conference 15 years ago, we have won 51 conference regular season and tournament titles, had 19 NCAA Tournament appearances, one women’s NIT appearance, and three victories in NCAA Tournament games. Over the same time period, individual Blue Devils have earned 49 Player of the Year Awards and Individual Championships, 24 Rookie of the Year Awards, and seven Defensive Player of the Year awards.
More recently, in the past two years, we have established a standard of excellence in all that we do and continue to achieve at a high level on and off the field of play. Since 2010, our 400 student-athletes have produced an aggregate GPA above a 3.0, have won 5 conference championships, a dozen Northeast Conference player and performer of the year awards and have contributed more than 6,000 hours of community service. In addition, we have created a new brand identity for Blue Devil Athletics that is modern, bold and classy; honoring our rich tradition, re-establishing who we are and who we aspire to be. Our mascot , “Kizer the Blue Devil”, honors the late Harrison Kaiser, the “Father of Central Athletics” and connects our legacy with our future. These new looks reflect the spirit of program and our remarkable student-athletes.
These accomplishments, past and present; along with our potential for future success, are due in no small way to the commitment and financial support of our donors. The number of contributors to Blue Devil Athletics has increased almost 60% in the past two years and is growing every day. It is our objective is to develop young men and women into champions; in the classroom, on the playing field, on campus, in the community, and ultimately in life. Your gift of any size makes a difference in the educational and developmental experience of our student-athletes that will benefit them personally and professionally for the rest of their lives. You are an important part of our history and an integral component to our future success.
With gratitude for your continued loyalty and generosity,
Paul Schlickmann, Director of Athletics
