Dr. Elizabeth Langhorne Thursday, February 2, 2012 3:15 – 4 PM CCSU Student Center, Bellin Galleries A-B
*This presentation is in conjunction with the “Figures” exhibition held at the CCSU Art Galleries.
Professor Langhorne will set the scene for murals in New Britain and at CCSU with a short powerpoint, touching on:the 1932 Benton murals in the New Britain Museum of American Art: Arts of Life in America; Federal WPA patronage of the Arts in the 1930s during the depression; then the WPA murals at the old New Britain High School dealing with the history of New Britain, and Bellin's late 1930s WPA murals at the Teachers College of CT [TCC, later CCSU]: Education as Life Process, Science and Industry, Philosophy and the Arts. Buildings with names like Welte-- are people! We see Dr. Herbert D Welte then President of TCC dispensing diplomas, etc. After involving the audience in looking at the murals directly, she will conclude by showing some of the current CCSU Mural Program walls in Memorial Hall and along side Vance for the up to date pursuit of some of the 1930s themes: gender, race, war and peace.
