How to Apply to the Graduate Programs in Reading and Language Arts (Literacy Education)

To apply to the graduate programs in Reading and Language Arts offered by the Department of Literacy, Elementary, and Early Childhood Education you must meet the eligibility criteria and complete the application steps.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's Degree in Education (or related field) from an accredited institution of higher education. Applicants must also have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.70 on a 4.00 point scale (where A is 4.00), or its equivalent, and good standing (3.00 GPA) in all post-baccalaureate course work.

Application Steps

Step 1: Application to the School of Graduate Studies

  • Apply to the School of Graduate Studies at //www.ccsu.edu/grad/admission/.
  • Pay a non-refundable fee of $50 to the School of Graduate Studies.
  • Contact all previous institutions you've attended and request that an official transcript be sent directly to the CCSU Graduate Recruitment and Admissions Office. If you have graduated from CCSU, you do not need to request a transcript – just indicate CCSU on your application.
  • For questions concerning the application to the School of Graduate Studies call CCSU Graduate Recruitment and Admissions at 860-832-2350.
  • Application deadlines: June 1 for Fall admission and November 1 for Spring admission.

Step 2: Application to the Department of Literacy, Elementary, and Early Childhood Education

  • Apply to the Department of Literacy, Elementary, and Early Childhood Education using the application packet for your program of interest (Master's, Sixth-Year, or Advanced Official Certificate Programs). Acceptance to the Reading and Language Arts Programs is predicated upon your acceptance to the School of Graduate Studies.

  • Application deadlines:

Steps 1 and 2 must be completed by:

May 1, if you are interested in Fall admission. Please note that application deadline for Fall admission to the Reading and Language Arts Programs differs from application deadline to the School of Graduate Studies.

Or

November 1, if you are interested in Spring admission (same deadline as School of Graduate Studies).

  • Admissions Interview:

When you complete the applications in steps 1 and 2, your name is automatically added to the Admissions Interview List for that semester. The Admissions Interview is part of the admissions review for the Department of Literacy, Elementary, and Early Childhood Education (not admission to the School of Graduate Studies). The Admissions Interview focuses on dispositions, knowledge, and experiences with pedagogy, diversity, and technology as they relate to literacy education. There are no special instructions on how to prepare for the Admissions Interview. All you need to do is show up on time. If you have questions, contact the Department of Literacy, Elementary, and Early Childhood Education.

If you are applying for Fall admission, you must attend the Admissions Interview on the 2nd Saturday in May. If you are applying for Spring admission, you must attend the Admissions Interview on the 2nd Saturday in November. Both interviews are scheduled a few days after the deadline for submitting your application to the Department of Literacy, Elementary, and Early Childhood Education.

The Admissions Interview takes place in Barnard Hall (check interactive campus map at http://web.ccsu.edu/campusmap/), room 209, from 9:30am to 11:30am.
