Michael
L. Printz Award
What
is the Michael L. Printz Award?
The
Young Adult Services Association (YALSA) of the American Library
Association and Booklist magazine sponsor this award to
recognize literary excellence in young adult literature. The
award-winning book may be fiction, non-fiction, poetry or an
anthology.
Who
decides the winner?
The
selection committee consists of nine YALSA members appointed by the
vice-president/president-elect for a one-year term. Beginning
in 2002, four members will be elected by the membership. One
member from Booklist also serves on the committee. Books must
be published in the year of the award and be designated by the
publisher as young adult or by YALSA as being for readers age 12
through 18. Up to four honor books may also be selected.
When
did the award begin?
The
award was established in 1999 to recognize, honor and promote
excellence in literature for young adults.
Why
is it called the Michael L. Printz Award?
The
award was named in honor of Michale Printz, a school librarian in
Topeka West (KS) High School for many years, retiring in 1994.
He was active in YALSA. He served on the Best Books for Young
Adults Committee and the Margaret A. Edwards Award Committee. He
died in 1996.
What
does the award look like?
The
award is a golden circle with a large black letter
"P." Surrounding are the words, "MICHAEL
l. PRINTZ AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN YOUNG ADULT
LITERATURE AMERICAN LIBRARY
ASSOCIATION." Quoted from the ALA
description..."YALSA created a place, a circle if you will, for
Mike to stand and be recognized."
