Placement Testing for Incoming Transfer Students

CCSU placement exams measure your entry-level skills in mathematics, writing and modern language. The results are used to place you in the appropriate courses so that, with reasonable effort, you will be successful. Call The Learning Center to make an appointment. (860) 832-1900.

CSU Board of Trustees Proficiency Requirement at CCSU

MATH 099 AND ENGLISH 099 are designed to provide the proficiency in English and Mathematics to undertake college-level courses at CCSU.  These courses must be successfully completed within your first 24 academic credits at CCSU. If not successfully completed, you will not be allowed to register for courses at CCSU or any other CSU institution.

What is the CCSU mathematics requirement?

All CCSU students are required to complete one or more math course(s) beyond MATH 101 to satisfy the general education requirement in Skill Area II.

Do I need to take a mathematics placement exam?

If you have not yet received your transfer credit evaluation and want to learn what courses may transfer credit to CCSU, please visit the CCSU transfer equivalency site (http://www.ccsu.edu/admission/trans/).

You do NOT need a placement exam if you have transfer credits at CCSU for MATH 99, MATH 101, MATH 115, MATH 119, MATH 121, MATH 123, MATH 135, MATH 152, or MATH 221. These courses are used as the prerequisite to your next level mathematics course.

If you have transfer credit for MATH 105, MATH 110, MATH 113, MATH 124, MATH 125, MATH 213, STAT 104, STAT 200, OR STAT 215, you do NOT need a placement exam unless your plan of study requires MATH 135 OR MATH 152.

If you have transfer credit for a math higher than MATH 101 at CCSU that is not listed above, please consult your advisor or the Department of Mathematical Sciences to see if a placement test is needed.

If you have taken Accuplacer at CCSU or elsewhere within the last two years, the score may be used for placement in a CCSU mathematics course.

If you have any questions regarding transfer credits for mathematics courses, you should contact the Department of Mathematical Sciences: (860) 832-2835.

What is the CCSU writing requirement?

All CCSU students are required to complete English 110 or English 202.  Students who transfer with more than 60 credits who have not completed the equivalent of English 110, should meet with the Chair of the English Department as soon as possible.

Do I need to take an English placement exam?

You do not need the English placement exam if you:

Earned a verbal SAT score of 450 or higher or an ACT score of 21 or higher, or

  Transferred to CCSU a course equivalent to English 110, English 099, 109, 111, 202, 204, 206, 210, 211, 220, 235, 236, 260, 261 or 403.

If you have questions, please call the English Department: (860) 832-2745.

Note: All CCSU students are required to complete ENG 110 successfully within their first 61 credits. If not, the student is required to take both Eng 110 and Eng 202

What is the Foreign Language requirement at CCSU?

Proficiency in a foreign language must be demonstrated before graduation. This requirement may be met by any of the following:

Three sequential years of one foreign language at the high-school level.

Elementary proficiency as demonstrated by successfully completing a second-semester-level CCSU foreign-language course (112 or 114). Students with no previous background in a language must take the first and second semesters (111 and 112, or 120); students who place out of 111 due to previous background in the language may satisfy the requirement by taking 112 or 114 only.

Passing a standardized examination that demonstrates knowledge of a foreign language equivalent to completion of a second-semester course or higher.

Successful completion of a foreign-language course at a level higher than the second-semester level.

Demonstration of native proficiency in a language other than English (requires evaluation of skill level by an appropriate faculty member and/or official documentation, and approval by the Chair of the Department of Modern Languages).

Do I need a foreign language placement exam?

A placement exam in foreign language is only required if you have not met the University language requirement and you have taken courses in the language in high school.  For placement exams in languages other than Spanish, please check the Modern Language Department website at www.modlang.ccsu.edu for further details regarding placement testing or call (860) 832-2875.

Register for your placement exam by calling The Learning Center (860) 832-1900.

More about Math Placement Exams:

There is no time limit on placement exams.  However, most exams take about an hour to complete.

The exam is a computerized, multiple choice exam separated into two modules.  the computer will only administer the second module if the results from the first module indicate the possibility of higher placement.  The first module is twelve questions on elementary algebra.  The second module consists of twenty questions from intermediate algebra, trigonometry, and pre-calculus.

Calculators are permitted on this exam, but do not require their use.

The Math Placement Exam measures your mathematics ability at the time you take the exam.  It does not measure what you once knew or what you could do if you tried harder.  Students planning to enroll at CCSU should have taken four years of high school mathematics.  Since some mathematical skills are easily forgotten, especially when not used on a regular basis, a review is advisable prior to taking the Math Placement Exam.  Sample items from the exam are available on the CCSU mathematics web site and at www.ccsu.edu/learnctr..

More about English Placement Exams

It takes about 30 minutes to complete the English Placement Exam, but there is NO TIME LIMIT.  The English Placement Exam tests your understanding of grammar and sentence structure.  The exam contains items that ask for sentence correction, sentence completion, and sentence construction shift. If you have questions, please call the English Department (860) 832- 2745.
