Who Needs To Take A Placement Exam?

The purpose of CCSU placement exam(s) is to measure your entry-level skills in the areas of mathematics, writing, and modern language.  The results are used to place you in the appropriate courses so that, with reasonable effort, you will be successful.

ALL entering freshmen are required to take the Mathematics Placement Exam.  Please call The Learning Center to make an appointment to take your placement exams.  (860) 832-1900.

If you are a Transfer student, you should read the information provided here to determine if you must take a placement exam.  Transfer students, part-time students, and continuing students should call The Learning Center to make an appointment (860) 832-1900.

Mathematics and English Placement Exams are given in The Learning Center. Take advantage of all of the practice links when you register for the exams. You will perform much better if you brush up on your skills and this will help you place into a higher-level course.

Math Placement Information

If you are an entering freshman, you are required to take the Math Placement Exam.

If you are a transfer student, you must take the Math Placement Exam unless you have transfer credits at CCSU for Math 099,  Math 101,  Math 115, Math 119, or Math 121.

These courses are used as the prerequisite to your next level mathematics course. If you have taken the Accuplacer test within the last two years, the score may be used for placement in a CCSU mathematics course. If you have any questions regarding transfer credits for mathematics courses, you should contact the Department of Mathematical Sciences (860) 832-2835.

You should take the Math Placement Exam prior to CCSU course registration. The exam is not timed, but typically takes no more than an hour.  The math placement exam is intended to place you into the appropriate mathematics course for your ability.  There is no passing or failing of the exam, but be sure that you are prepared to take it as it may only be taken once.

Listed below you will find some general questions relating to the math placement exam.  Browse the list to see if a particular question you have has been answered.

  • What is the format of the Math Placement Exam?

The exam is a computerized, multiple-choice exam separated into two modules. The computer will only administer the second module if the results from the first module indicate the possibility of a higher placement.

The first module is composed of twelve questions on elementary algebra. If you are successful with the first module, you will move on to the second module, which consists of twenty questions from intermediate algebra, trigonometry and pre-calculus.

  • Can I use a calculator to take the exam?

The use of calculators is allowed on the Math Placement Exam.  However, there is no problem on the exam that cannot be completed without the use of a calculator. Calculators must be the equivalent of a TI-86 or under in their complexity.

English Placement Information

The English Placement Exam is not required if you have one of the following:

  • A verbal SAT score of 450 or higher or an ACT score of 21 or higher

  • Successful completion of English 99 or English 109 at CCSU or a course that has transferred to CCSU as the equivalent of English 110, English 099 or English 109.

Practice Questions for the Math and English Placement Exams

Studies show that if you prepare for the placement exam, you will perform better.  The educational institutions below offer practice exercises for both the Math and English Placement Exams:

What do I need to bring to the exam?

Please bring a photo ID (i.e. driver's license). We will need to see this for identification purposes. Also, bring your CCSU ID number written down. This is how your scores are recorded. You may bring a calculator up to a TI86. However a calculator is not necessary to complete the exam.

Examination Location

Placement exams for Math and English are held in the Learning Center, which is located in Copernicus Hall Room 22413.  If you need directions to the campus or a map of the building to find Room 22413, see the Directions section.

Modern Language Placement

The foreign language requirement at CCSU is satisfied by successful completion of the third high school level of a single language or a sufficiently high score on the Modern Language Placement exam. Your high school transcript must be on file in the Office of Recruitment and Admission for requirement determination. The Modern Language Placement Exam is required if you:

  • HAVE NOT met the CCSU foreign language requirement (only one or two years of high school work) and wish to continue studying the foreign language you studied in high school.

  • HAVE met the CCSU foreign language requirement through high school course work and wish to continue studying the same language in college.

Please check the Modern Language Department website (www.modlang.ccsu.edu) for further details regarding placement testing. The Learning Center administers the Spanish placement exam. Call for an appointment (860) 832-1900. If you are unable to check the website for other language placement exams, you may call (860) 832-2875 with questions.
