Note
Taking Technique
This is a very active and effective
note taking strategy that will help you use your class notes to become
an expert on lectured material.
|
Use the steps below to begin: |
|
1)
The margin on a typical notebook page is about 1.5"
and pink in color. Extend this margin to 3" by drawing
another line straight down the page 1.5" from the pink
margin. |
|
2) Take
notes on the right, leaving your new, larger, left-hand margin
blank. |
| Now begin
taking notes. You can use the larger left-hand margin to make
notes to yourself. For example, if you fall behind while taking
notes, just leave a space and mark it to denote that you missed information.
If something sounds confusing, put an asterisk in the margin. |
 |
| In the left hand margin,
generate open-ended questions that can be answered using the
notes you wrote in the right margin. Try to write
these questions directly next to/adjacent to the answers in
the notes. Make sure that your questions reflect the
information in your notes. |
|
Use your questions to test
yourself on the information in your notes. This method will
help you remember and understand your notes better. |
|
Make a habit of using this
strategy during your lectures. The more you practice, the
better you will get. at taking notes, generating questions,
and remembering the information. |
|
Be creative. Try to generate an
essay question from your lecture notes. This will be a
summary question. Use this summary question as
a mock exam to self-test yourself. |
