Five Steps to Being an Effective Tutor
|
Step 1: Know
What is Expected of you as a Tutor |
|
Know your responsibilities and duties
as a tutor in regards to tutees, supervisors, instructors, and other tutors
(See the Tutor Roles and Responsibilities lesson). |
|
Step 2: Setting
Up the Tutor Session |
•
Shape the tutoring environment.
• Welcome student to the math lab and introduce yourself.
•
First, allow your tutee the opportunity to express him/herself. |
•
Next, allow the student to
participate in setting up an agenda.
•
Notify tutee of available time (how much time until you are off duty).
|
|
Step 3: Meeting
your Tutee's Needs |
|
The better you meet your tutee's
needs during a session, the better the session. Get to
know your student's:
•
Psychological needs
•
Academic needs
• Social
needs |

|
|
Step 4: The
Ingredients of a Good Tutor Session |
|
The following are some of the necessary ingredients for a good session: |
•
Give your student undivided
attention
• Ask open ended questions
•
Have empathy with your student's
trouble spots
•
Be honest with your student |
•
Have a sense of humor
•
Have the ability to lighten up a situation
•
Have a good interaction with your student: a good give-and-take
•
Know your student's strengths
and weaknesses
|
•
Identify learning styles to help work through weak spots
•
Provide positive reinforcement
•
Know when to stop a session
•
End the session on a positive note |
|
Step 5:
Ending the Tutoring Session |
|
Do not just say good bye when the session
is over. You should: |
 |
•
Positively assess the work that
was done during the session
•
Ask the tutee to summarize what
he/she accomplished during the session
•
Encourage the tutee to
practice any skills learned in the session
•
Thank the tutee for using
the tutor service
•
Always end with a positive comment
