Home Use
We are often asked to recommend a computer for home use. While today's computers can have many bells and whistles such as firewire support, combo DVD/CD-RW's, etc., recommendations below list the basic ingredients to what we consider to be a solid machine. On the PC side, we recommend Gateway and Dell because of their warranty/service. Purchasing a generic, no name brand may save you money up front, but if you experience hardware issues down the road, service may become an issue. Dell offers a next day, onsite support policy for three years as does Gateway.
Apple has a store located in West Farms Mall, not too far from campus. Our initial recommendation is to visit them to actually see what is available. Apple has what is called the "AppleCare" protection program which extends the warranty from one to three years. Again, a very good option to consider. |
