Is your notebook battery feeling drained? The majority of notebook computer batteries are now Lithium Ion, and should be handled differently than the older Nickel Cadium batteries. Here are some handy tips for getting the most from a Lithium Ion battery:

  • Room temperature is best. Notebook computers and batteries are best used and stored at room temperature, not too hot or cold( i.e., – do not store batteries in the refrigerator).
  • Do not drain the battery to 0% capacity. Unlike the older Nickel Cadium batteries, Lithium batteries should be re-charged before dipping below 10% capacity remaining.
  • All batteries have a finite life expectancy (usually not exceeding 800 charges or approximately 3 years of regular use). Avoid needless charges and DO NOT leave the battery connected to AC Power all the time. Doing so may cause a battery to overcharge or continuously re-charge, reducing battery life. If you have a Mac, Apple recommends charging and discharging batteries at least once a month.
  • Disconnect energy draining devices such as USB drives, disable wireless and Bluetooth devices when not needed, and reduce the screen brightness. If you have a Windows-based computer, you can adjust power settings through the Power Options icon in the Control Panel.
A well maintained battery should last a minimum of three years and potentially much longer when treated with care.
