How can I tell if my mail box is full?

There is no surefire how to tell if your mail box is full, but here is a good rule of thumb.  If your Outlook folder is 50 megabytes (50,000 kilobytes) or more, your box is probably full.

To check your folder size do the following:

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook XP
  2. On the Tools menu, click Mailbox Cleanup
  3. From here, you can do the following:
    1. View the total size of your mailbox and of individual folders within it.
    2. Find items older than a certain KB size.
    3. Find items that are larger than a certain KB size.
    4. Archive items using AutoArchive.
    5. View the size of your Deleted Items folder.
    6. Empty your Deleted Items folder.

If you have Microsoft Outlook version 2003

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook
  2. From the Folder List, right click on "Outlook Today." If your folder list is not being displayed, from the "View" pull-down menu click on "Folder." The folder list should now display.
  3. Right click on Outlook Today
  4. Select Properties for "Outlook Today"
  5. Click on Folder Size. The folder size is listed as the Total size.
  6. If you have determined that your mail box is full, you can do a couple of things to clean it out. First, you can empty your deleted emails or delete old mail. The second is to archive old mail. This takes the mail off the mail server and places it on your computer. You can do that by following the instructions on this web page.
