Frequently asked questions

What is SPAM?

SPAM is unsolicited email.  Usually SPAM is considered to be bulk emailing much like the junk mail that is delivered by the post office.  SPAM is usually advertising for goods or services.  Often these goods or services are of a questionable nature.  Replying to SPAM is not recommended as it will only 1) prove to spammers that your email account is active and you may receive more SPAM and 2) if you purchase anything from this type of solicitation, again it will only encourage spammers that this technique of reaching potential customers works.

What is SPOOFING?

Spoofing is the forging of the "from" field in an email.  Often spammers will send out email with a from address that is not their own.  They do this so if a server blocks the email because it is spam, their mail box will not become full.

Many viruses were designed to "spoof" the from field so that the message appears to be from someone you know.  Some viruses grab the email address book from computers it has infected and uses these addresses to send to as well as make it appear as if the infected message is coming from someone in the address book.
