Defragmenting Your Hard Drive


As you use your computer, files on the hard drive fragment causing the system to lose efficiency.  Disk Defragmenter is a utility that reassembles your files, thereby decreasing loading times, and improves hard drive efficiency, thereby restoring system performance.

Before beginning the defragmentation process, be sure you are not running any other programs as they will not defragment and will slow the process.

Disk Defragmenter is installed on all Windows 2000/XP computer by default; you can launch it by:

  1. Going to start

  2. Clicking on All Programs

  3. Selecting Accessories

  4. Selecting System Tools

  5. Selecting Disk Defragmenter

  6. Once you are in Disk Defragmenter, select the drive at the top you want defragged, then click Defrag at the bottom.

If at this point you are informed there is no defragmenting utility available, please call the Help Desk (2-1720), and they will arrange to have it installed for you.

Click Analyze to discover if the drive needs defragmenting.  After a minute or two the utility will make a recommendation to defragment or not.  To begin defragmenting a drive; double-click its Defragment icon.   

Disk Defragmenter will automatically defragment the hard drive and continue the process even if the station is locked or the screen saver is running.  Once defragmentation is complete, you can exit the program by left-clicking the File menu located in the upper left corner of the Diskeeper Lite window, left-clicking Exit, and you are done!

  • To defragment a computer’s hard drive you must be an administrator on that machine.
  • Disk Defragmenter is for Windows 2000 and XP.
