“Institute of Technology & Business Development Expanding Programs & Services”
Samuel Irizarry,
Former Community Business Development Specialist
The Community Business Development Center at CCSU’s Institute of Technology &
Business Development (ITBD) continues to expand its programs and services. The
Institute will be providing training for the “New Britain Internship Program”
for 30 “at-risk” New Britain High School students. This is the second time that
the ITBD will provide training for this type of program. Students in the program
will receive training in the fields of engineering, healthcare,
retail/hospitality, information technology, and financial services. The funding
for this program is being provided by Capital Workforce Partners from a grant
obtained through Representative Nancy Johnson. Also, a second Teacher
Enhancement Program will be conducted during the current school year for
teachers in the science fields.
Continuing our successful “Business Start-Up” program, we will be conducting
another class beginning on October 25, 2006. The Spanish Speaking Center is also
a partner in the business program. The Center provides recruitment and training
to individuals interested in starting their own business. The business start-up
program is funded by TD Banknorth, which has provided financial and non
financial contributions to foster economic development in New Britain and
surrounding towns.
Last year, we successfully launched the ITBD “Executive Breakfast Series.” This
academic year, KPMG has awarded CCSU $4,000 for the breakfast series, which will
focus on “Best Practices.” The dates for the series and the speakers are the
following:
• October 24, 2006, Chris DiPentima, Owner and CEO of Pegasus Manufacturing,
Inc. and Precision Speed Manufacturing, LLC
• December 13, 2006, Angelo J. Messina (CCSU alumnus), Vice President and Chief
Financial Officer for Otis Elevator Company.
• February 6, 2007, Norman L. Rodriques, President of Springfield Spring
Corporation.
• April 17, 2007, John Soto, Owner and President of Space-Craft Manufacturing,
Inc.
If you are interested in attending, please contact our office at (860)
832-0700. CCSU received an extension on a $307,000 Disadvantaged Business
Enterprise Program grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation. ITBD’s Community Business Development Center has been and will continue to
provide business assessment and training to certified businesses from
Connecticut. Additional support for this program will come from another $220,000
grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation to create a virtual
incubator for disadvantaged business enterprises. The incubator will be located
in the ITBD offices at 185 Main Street, New Britain, CT.
