POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
The Coordinator for Academic and Cultural Programs will work closely with
and provide support to the Associate Director for Academic and Cultural
Programs and the Dean. Under their direction he or she will assist in the
development and implementation of scholarly and cultural programs, assist
in research projects, and assist in the Institute's communications such as
the newsletter and web site. Participates in the preparation, coordination,
and distribution of The Italian American Review, the Institute's social
science journal.
Assists in the development and implementation of public programs such as
lectures, readings, film screenings, symposia, conferences, exhibitions,
etc., including scheduling, coordinating with invited guests, writing for
print publication and the Web; assists in the writing of research projects,
reports, articles, institute communications (such as the newsletter and Web
site), and grant proposals as well as seeking other modes of research
funding; serves as a resource to local, regional, private, and public
sector agencies regarding academic and cultural issues; and performs other
related duties as assigned by the Dean.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in social science or humanities, or other related
discipline required. Must show a demonstrated excellence in writing.
Desirable qualifications include: strong interpersonal and communication
skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of
constituencies including scholars, artists, and the general public;
familiarity with issues relating to the Italian-American community;
knowledge of Italian language; and ability to update a Web site, using HTML
or other Web editing software preferred.

DUTIES: Teach all levels of Italian language. Participate in departmental and college activities, such as curriculum development, grant writing, assessment, faculty development and mentoring student projects. Productive scholarship expected. Evening/Weekend schedule may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. required for professorial titles. For Associate and Professor, the candidate must have a record of significant achievement in the field. Ph.D. preferred but individuals with master¹s degree and doctoral work in progress may be considered for hire as instructor. Persons appointed to the instructor title are only eligible for five annual appointments. Appointment to a professorial title subsequent to service as instructor will only be considered if the candidate has obtained he qualifications for professorial ranks as stated above. Instructors with ABD preferred. Knowledge of current language teaching methodology & technology preferred.

Lecturer in Italian Language
Smith College invites applications for a one-year lecturer position in
Italian beginning in the Fall 2008. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or be
A.B.D. in Italian Language and Literature, or a Masters in Second Language
Acquisition. Native or near-native proficiency with expertise in language
teaching and pedagogy required. Knowledge of computer assisted instruction
desirable. The successful applicant will be expected to teach five courses a
year in Italian language at all levels, be involved in day-to-day teamwork with
colleagues teaching the same courses and be willing to learn about and implement
new technologies. We are committed to our program and expect all faculty to
participate fully in all Italian Department activities, including regular
contact with students.
