System Status/Outage Information

When network/system issues occur, e-mail is sometimes not available or accessible to all in order for us to bring you information.  We'd like to take this opportunity to share with you our "System Status" Twitter feed which is part of the IT Service Catalog homepage at http://itservices.ccsu.edu.  If you have a Twitter account, you can follow us @CCSUIT.

Software Installation Policy for Classrooms and Labs

Requests for software installation in a classroom or lab are required to be submitted at least three weeks in advance. This timeframe gives IT a chance to thoroughly evaluate the software to assure it will work well in our environment. To request software installation in a classroom or lab, please complete the “Software Installation Request for Classrooms & Labs” form using the online Service Request system athttps://hsm.ccsu.edu.

Online/Self-Paced Training

Peruse the online, self-paced tutorials for both Blackboard Learn and Microsoft Office 2013 in the Organizations@ccsu tab in Blackboard Learn.  If you do not see a training session that meets your needs, please email idtrc@ccsu.eduto schedule an individual training session.

Microsoft Office 2013 on Campus

The classroom computers running Windows will all have Office 2013 for the fall semester.  Up until now, upgrading to Office 2013 has been optional.  Starting in August, IT will begin updating administrative offices to Office 2013.  IT will then upgrade faculty computers.

If you would like to have Office 2013 for Windows installed on your office computer now, please follow these steps:

1. Click on the Windows Start button in the bottom left of the screen.

2. On the line that appears, Search Programs and files, type the word Software.

3. At the top of the list, you will see the words Software Center, click on that to launch the Software Center.

4. Check the box to the left of “Microsoft Office 2013 32 bit”.

5. Click the [INSTALL] button in the bottom right corner of the Software Center screen to start the install.

Microsoft Office 2016 Incompatibility Issue for Apple Computers

This version was recently released however, it is not compatible with the CCSU email servers.  Once we migrate to Microsoft’s hosted Exchange service, this issue will be resolved.  We hope to have firm plans by the start of the fall semester.

Windows 10 – On CCSU Computers

As you may be aware Microsoft recently announced the release of the Windows 10 Operating System.  Please do not install Windows 10 on any CCSU owned computers.  IT is currently working on deploying a 64 Bit version of Windows 7 and have not begun testing applications for compatibility in Windows 10.

Blackboard Learn Chat Tool/Virtual Classroom Will Be Disabled

Due to continuing issues with Java, starting with the fall 2015 semester, the Chat Tool will be disabled.  This includes the virtual classroom tool which combines chat and the whiteboard.  For several semesters, we have incurred consistent issues with the Java applet running Chat within Blackboard Learn. With the advent of smartphones, tablets and constant changes to browser and Java versions running on these devices, it has become impossible to support the tool on a global basis.

We invite faculty to use WebEx which is a more powerful tool.  WebEx is a web conferencing tool used for synchronous communication.  It allows you to connect with your students using voice and video.  There is even a chat tool that can be utilized. For more information on WebEx, please contact the IT Help Desk.

Digital Cable Television – Coming This Summer!

BLUE TV is readying for the transition to all digital cable channels on campus this summer. All channels will be digitally transmitted across campus and a new program guide will be available on the cable system. Additional channels will be added to the lineup and some channel locations will be changing.  It will be important to rescan your television or tuning device in order to receive the new digital lineup.  Please review your television to see if it has a Clear QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) tuner built-in.  You will need to locate your television model number and perform a search online using that make and model. Most manufacturers offer an online version of the operator’s manual that will confirm if your television has a QAM tuner built-in. Please also consider visiting the Campus Televideo Digital Television FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page for a list of known televisions that do not have a tuner built-inhttp://campustelevideo.com/customercenter/#faq

If no QAM tuner is present in your television, alternate solutions are available.  Please email mediacenter@ccsu.edu for more information.
