Tom Ratliff received his B.S.Ed. from Central Connecticut State University in 1991 and an M.S. in Early American History in 1993. He studied Connecticut History at the University of Connecticut, Maritime History at the Munson Institute at Mystic Seaport, and Library and Information Science at Southern Connecticut State University. He taught at the secondary level for four years.

His career at CCSU began in the fall of 1993—with assignments in both the History and Secondary Education Departments and was the Social Science Coordinator in 1997–1998 and 2002–2003. He has taught online since the mid-1990s and has twice received awards for Excellence in Online Learning. Tom currently teaches U. S. History, World Civilization, and Connecticut History at CCSU, and American History at both Capital and Asnuntuck Community Colleges.

Tom is the author of several books for young readers, including the Matty Trescott stories—a six-volume historical fiction series set in the Civil War (and Connecticut)—as well as non-fiction titles for the National Geographic Society, Scholastic Books, and Book House (Salariya Publishing) of London. He has written the text for graphic novels for Barron’s and currently writes serialized stories for the Newspapers in Education Program. In 2002 one of his stories was chosen as the Best Original Work by the Newspaper Association of America.

Tom’s academic writings include articles in Dragonlode, Middle School JournalResearch in Middle Level Education, and theHistorical Dictionary of Women’s Education in the United States. He is currently researching a book on Connecticut’s role in the Revolutionary War and a novel based on his experiences in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He serves on the Board of Directors of the New Britain Historical Society and has designed (and maintains) their web page.
