CCSU Summer–to-Summer Program 2007-2008 Cohort

Preparing Excellent Teachers for Connecticut’s Urban Elementary Schools

The Summer-to-Summer program is a selective graduate-level certification program that prepares qualified students for careers as elementary teachers, emphasizing preparation for teaching in urban schools. The next group will begin the program in late May 2007 and complete the program in early August 2008, fourteen months later.  The program selectively admits no more than 25 students each year.  Students in this program complete a structured sequence of courses and field experiences as a cohort group. The work load in the program is heavy and requires genuinely full-time study.  Up to twenty-one credits earned in the program may later be used toward a master's degree in elementary education. In addition to courses, field experiences, and full-time student teaching, each student conducts a school-based action research project.

Because the program is very demanding, students must complete all prerequisites before beginning the program in May.  The prerequisites required include the following:

·         Completion of a bachelor’s degree.  (Students may be admitted to the 2007-2008 cohort pending proof of degree no later than May 2007.)

·         Cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.70 at CCSU and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.70 in all undergraduate coursework taken at all institutions.

·         Completion of an acceptable subject matter major.

·         Completion of specific prerequisite courses that include lifespan human development, child development, an American history survey course, two science courses (one with lab), and math courses judged equivalent to Math 113 and Math 213 with no grade below C.  These prerequisites will be evaluated when the initial application is received.

·      Completion of Praxis I PPST tests or a waiver letter from Connecticut State Department of Education.

Applicants also submit the following items.

·         A resume documenting your educational and work experiences.

·         Two references (signed originals) on the rating scale reference form provided. One reference must be from someone, preferably a professional, who has observed your work with children.  The second reference should be from a faculty member in your subject matter major. (Personal references are not accepted.)

·         A word-processed essay demonstrating a command of the English language and explaining the experiences and thinking that have led you to choose (a) an elementary teaching career and (b) this certification program.  A second essay, written “on the spot,” will also be required as part of the admissions interview process.

·         Documentation of 30 hours of quality experience with children, preferably in an urban school setting using the “Statement of Experience with Children” form.

·         Official non-CCSU transcripts from all institutions attended even if coursework did not transfer to CCSU.  (Two sets of official transcripts are required, one for Graduate Admissions and one for the program.)

Qualified applicants are invited to participate in an admissions interview.

Review of complete applications will begin in November 2006 with the goal of admitting the first members of the 2007-2008 cohort in December 2006. (To be fully eligible for financial aid, complete applications must be received by December 1, 2006.)  A second review of complete applications will be conducted during February and March 2007.  Because prerequisites must be completed prior to May 2007, early fall applications are strongly encouraged.  Fully qualified late applicants may be considered on a space-available basis.

A complete application includes two components, a CCSU Graduate School application and a Summer-to-Summer application packet.  Graduate school applications are obtained from and submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office.  The CCSU Graduate School application may be completed in hard copy or submitted online.  Contact Graduate Admissions at 832-2350 for application materials.  An additional admissions packet is required for the Summer to Summer Program.  This packet is available in hard copy or through the CCSU Graduate School website.  If you want a hard copy of the packet contact Diane Colangelo at 860-832-2431 or email colangelodi@ccsu.edu with a complete mailing address.  The Summer-to-Summer application packets are submitted to the secretary for the Summer-to-Summer program, Diane Colangelo, 277 Barnard Hall, CCSU, 1615 Stanley St., New Britain, CT 06050.

Any initial questions about the program or the application may be directed to the Summer-to-Summer program secretary.  Follow-ups and more technical questions may be directed to the Summer to Summer Coordinator, Dr. Nancy Hoffman.   Dr. Hoffman is best contacted by e-mail at Hoffmann@ccsu.edu.
