I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new as well
as continuing graduate students for the 2005 - 2006 academic year. I am
proud to say that you have joined a record enrollment of graduate students
this year, helping us to increase our graduate community. The Office of
Graduate Studies, the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) and the GSA are all
working together to make our graduate community more visible on our
campus. The prominent aim of our Graduate Studies mission is to “provide
all graduate students with the environment to develop knowledge and skills
to make contributions to their discipline and to the rapidly changing
world.” Five tenets are part of the Graduate Studies mission: Community
of Scholars; Scholarly Inquiry; Intellectual and Personal Integrity;
Excellence; Leadership. As you pursue your graduate studies, I hope
that each of you will find ways to actualize these tenets for yourself,
whether it is through research, innovative and applied practices, new
understanding of and commitment to professional standards or through your
initiative for shaping the directions of your disciplines.
Regardless of the directions you each take, I hope you strive always for
excellence. I also hope you find ways to become part of our graduate
community. If you
have any questions or need assistance, please visit us in the Graduate
Studies Office, located in Barnard 102. The staff and I in Graduate
Studies are always available to answer questions about graduate policies
and procedures and provide you with materials such as the new Graduate
Catalogue, the Graduate Handbook, the Thesis Guidelines Handbook and any
forms you need for your graduate program. These forms are also
available on the Graduate Studies web site.
Best wishes for a most productive
semester!
Sincerely,
Paulette Lemma
