Sixth Year Certificate Educational Leadership

Dear Prospective Candidate:

The Sixth Year Certificate program is designed to prepare certified teachers for informed leadership positions in education through a course of study, which will enable them to shape organizational direction; effect institutional planning and development; and influence organizational performance. Program graduates will be eligible for such positions on the staff of central offices, regional educational agencies, and state education agencies. Notable features of the new program include rigorous entry standards, a strong curriculum presented by resident faculty and practitioner colleagues, a qualifying examination for certification, and required field experiences.

In addition to meeting the general requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies, admission decisions will be based on the following:

1. A master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education

2. A minimum of three years teaching experience and a Connecticut Teaching Certificate (or eligibility).

3. Two letters from school administrators supporting the application and concentrating on such areas as applicant strengths and weaknesses, interpersonal skills, intellectual ability and leadership potential.

4. A formal, typed application essay.

5. Completion of EDL 590, "Leaders as Learners," and successful portfolio presentation to search committee.

A 3.0 minimum Graduate GPA and a 2.7 undergraduate GPA are required. Students' with a 3.3 or higher post-baccalaureate GPA (on a four-point scale) will receive first priority for admission into the program.

Admissions standards for this program are quite rigorous and not everyone who meets the admissions requirements can be accepted. Only students admitted to this program will be eligible to apply for institutional recommendation for the Intermediate Administrator or Supervisor Certificate.

All applicants and supporting materials for admission to the program must be received at the Department of Educational Leadership by April 1st for the Summer Semester, and October 15th for the Spring semester. In addition to all of the School of Graduate Studies requirements, candidates must submit the following;

1. Copy of Connecticut Teaching Certificate;

2. Two letters of recommendation from School Administrators completed on the enclosed reommendation forms;

3. Typed application essay which focuses on (1) the reasons that led the candidate to the area of school leadership, and (2) future career goals. An application essay form is enclosed.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at (860)832-2130 if I can provide further information.

Sincerely,
