Appeal Procedure

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is a requirement for all students receiving federal, state, or institutional aid.  Specifically, financial aid recipients must meet a standard to maintain eligibility for financial aid.  Students must be matriculated and must maintain that quality of academic performance required to remain a matriculated undergraduate or graduate student at CCSU.

SAP towards graduation is measured on a yearly basis.  Measurement is conducted at the close of spring semester.  An academic year runs from the beginning of fall semester to the end of spring semester.  Deficiency with the quantitative and/or qualitative SAP guidelines may result in the denial of financial aid assistance.  Applicants denied financial assistance because of inadequate SAP will be granted the option of appealing their aid denial.  Appeals must be based on special or unusual circumstances.

Student aid programs affected-

These guidelines apply to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at CCSU who have been awarded federal, state, and/or institutional aid.

Successful completion of credits-

To successfully complete credit hours, you must receive a grade of A, B, C, D, or P in a course.  Failed courses or audited courses will not be counted.  Repeated courses, for which completed credit hours were previously credited, are not considered successful completion of credit hours.  Non-credit developmental courses recommended by the student’s academic advisor shall count on a semester-hour equivalent basis as determined by the university.

Withdrawals and cancellations-

Withdrawals after the first day of classes during the semester count as a semester attended when determining overall semester count eligibility and credit hour count eligibility, unless the student does not attend any classes for the given semester and receives a 100 percent refund of all fees.  Cancellation of registration on or before the first day of classes does not count as a semester attended when determining semester count or credit hour count eligibility.  Administrative cancellation will not count towards the overall semester or credit hour count eligibility.

Disqualifications and reinstatement-

CCSU notifies students not meeting SAP requirements after the spring semester grades have been posted.  Students not meeting SAP requirements fall into one of two categories.

Probationary letter-

Students not making SAP towards the completion of a degree will receive a probationary letter notifying them of either 1) they are being given one academic year following the SAP probation to become compliant, or 2) after the probationary period the student is not making SAP or has not graduated, the student will be ineligible to receive further financial aid.

What is probation?

Probation means the student has failed to earn the minimum number of credit hours for the academic year by the end of the spring semester, and/or does not have the appropriate GPA.  You may still receive financial aid at CCSU during the year you are on probation.  However, you are required to make up the deficient credit hours or GPA by the end of the spring semester of the probationary period.  The CCSU financial aid computer system tracks your progress as you may or may not complete your deficient hours and/or GPA.

What is suspension?

Students who fail to make up the deficient hours or GPA will be placed on financial aid suspension, and will not be eligible for further financial aid at CCSU until the deficient hours and GPA have been completed.  If unusual circumstances exist which prevented you from completing the required number of hours or GPA, you may appeal for a review of your suspension status.

What is termination?

The total number of hours for which you may be funded are limited to the specific degree you are seeking.  Once the allowable maximum is reached, you will be placed on financial aid termination and will become ineligible for additional federal student financial aid.

Appeal procedures-

To appeal, complete and return an appeal form with all documentation of personal, family, and other emergencies to the appropriate campus officer designated by the university president.  The financial aid office may direct you to the appropriate officer and where to obtain the appeal form.
