How Aid Decision is Made

The Cost of Attendance (COA) is determined by CCSU

The student’s COA budget is an estimate of the educational and miscellaneous expenses you may incur during the academic year.  These costs include tuition, fees, room and board, transportation, books, personal needs, and living allowances.  The COA includes the direct charges actually paid to CCSU – tuition, fees, room and board - and the average allowances for costs normally covered by the student.

The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is calculated

The EFC is determined based on an estimate of your and your family’s financial strength and ability to contribute.  This is calculated by the U.S. Department of Education by application of its needs analysis formulas to the data submitted in the student’s FAFSA.  Complete and accurate data submitted by the student is essential to this process being completed on a timely basis.

 Financial Need is Computed

The student’s eligible financial need is determined by subtracting the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) from the Cost of Attendance (COA) budget.

The Financial Aid Award is Constructed

Eligibility for government grants is determined, and if there is a demonstrated significant need, other aid may also be offered from CCSU administered and funded resources.  The total financial aid award may include one or any combination of the federal PELL grant, state grant, university scholarship and/or grant, SEOG grant, federal and state work-study, and federal and university loans.

The student is sent notification of the award offer on line in his/her CCSU Central Pipeline account and/or in an award letter.

The Financial Aid Award is Reviewed

Once you receive your financial aid award - whether on line or by mail, review it carefully.  Some kinds of financial aid require additional steps to facilitate funding and awarding.  You will be given instructions about what additional steps may be required.  However, it is important that you accept and/or decline all or in part of the financial aid package outlined in the award and electronically sign it by the date indicated, otherwise your aid may be cancelled.
