Film Descriptions:
Ferry Tales
(2003, 40 minutes)
A film
by Katja Esson
Academy
Award Nominee for Best Documentary short, this charming and often
outrageous doc reveals a secret world in the powder room of the Staten
Island Ferry – bringing together white-collar and blue-collar, sisters
and socialites in the feisty “ferry clique.” Broaching divorce, single
motherhood and domestic violence, the film exposes the realities facing
working women today. Nationally broadcast on HBO.
Director Katja
Esson will be present and discuss her film
Troop 1500 Girl Scouts Behind
Bars
(2005, 68 minutes)
A film by Ellen Spiro and Karen Bernstein
Their
mothers may be convicted thieves, murderers and drug dealers, but the
girls of Troop 1500 want to be doctors, social workers and marine
biologists. Meeting monthly at Hilltop Prison, this unique Girl Scout
troop brings scouts together with their inmate moms –
giving them a chance to rebuild their relationships. Nationally
broadcast on Emmy-award winning PBS series, Independent Lens.
Quick Brown Fox
(2004, 62 minutes)
A
documentary by Ann Hedreen and Rustin Thompson
Ann
Hedreen’s mother started showing symptoms of Alzheimer’s at the
barely-old age of 60. Though it began with small signs – forgetting what
she was doing and losing her way
home – the irreversible disease would change her family’s
life forever. Quick Brown Fox combines this moving family journey
with an insightful look at the sciences and politics of Alzheimer’s, a
disease that now affects more than 18 million worldwide.
Al’leessi…An African Actress
(2004, 69
minutes)
A Film by Rahmatou Keita
Niger, Subtitled
Zalika
Souley was Africa’s first professional female actress, working with such
celebrated directors as Oumarou Ganda and Moustapha Alassane. She now
lives in poverty with her four children. Interviews with this former
“bad girl,” along with rare archival footage from the classic African
thrillers, westerns and detective films of the time make this an
extraordinary record of the heyday of Nigerian cinema.
Dr. Beti Ellerson will be speaking after the showings of
"Al-leesi...An African Actress" on Wednesday October 18, 2-3:15 pm and
Thursday Oct. 19, 9:30-10:45 am in Torp Theatre. This will be a rare
opportunity to meet and hear the foremost scholar of African films in
this country.
Highway Courtesans
(2005, 71 minutes)
A film by Mystelle
Brabbee
India/US, Subtitled
Screened
to the acclaim at festivals around the world, this provocative
coming-of-age film follows a young woman born into a centuries-old
tradition of prostitution. Against the rich backdrop of rural India, the
film tracks the independent Guddi from age 16 to 23 as she is influenced
by modern ideas about freedom and choice, and takes steps to realize her
dreams.
Dreams of Jagodina
(2005, 29 minutes)
A film by Nora
Malone
This
poignant and beautiful film provides a rare cross-cultural perspective
on the cycle of family violence and how disfunction can become
internalized over generations. On the verge of womanhood, Serbian émigré
Suzanna Jeremic must make the most difficult decision of her life: to
assume the role of victim in keeping with her family legacy, or to
strike out on her own to create a life that is different.
Further Off The Straight
and Narrow
(2006, 45 minutes)
A videotape by Katherine Sender
This
important new documentary picks up where an earlier version left off.
Since the release of the initial video in the late 1990s, there has been
a marked increase in the presence of GLBT characters on television.
Against the backdrop of political and social issues affecting the GLBT
community, Further Off the Straight and Narrow takes a close look
at sitcoms, reality shows, and premium cable programming as it explores
how representations of GLBT characters have become more complex and
varied in recent years.
Director Katherine Sender will be present .
