The Application Process

Before Applying

Requirements: Applications must have a baccalaureate degree in English or American literature or a closely related field from an accredited college or university, or 30 hours of appropriate undergraduate course work in the discipline (as approved by departmental review). Additional undergraduate credits will be required of students who lack sufficient preparation in literature. Applicants must also have a GPA of at least 3.00 on a four-point scale both in overall undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate course work and in English courses. Conditional admission may be offered to students who do not meet all of these requirements.

Applying

The application process requires you to submit material to both the School of Graduate Studies and the English Department. 

I. School of Graduate Studies

 

Step 1: Submit the Application Form

Complete your graduate admissions application online. Errors, omissions, or missing transcripts will delay the processing of your file.

Submit the $50.00 application fee with your online application (This fee is non-refundable).

Step 2: Submit your Official Transcripts

Contact all previous institutions you've attended and request that an official transcript be sent directly to the CCSU Graduate Recruitment and Admissions Office. This includes transcripts for courses taken and transferred to another institution.

II. The English Department

 

Step 1: Submit application letter

Send us a letter of application that tells us about yourself and why you want to pursue a graduate degree in English literature.

 

Step 2: Recommendation Letters

Arrange to have sent to us two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your academic or professional work.

 

Step 3: Writing Sample

Send us a writing sample of 10-15 pages that showcases your analytical or critical writing about literature. Work that you’ve written for previous courses is acceptable—indeed, encouraged!  However, "creative" pieces—like, poetry, fiction, or memoir—are not appropriate.
